Market supply is in short supply
"The advantages of PSS substrate are very obvious." In the past, the traditional PSS business model was to purchase substrate sheets from upstream sapphire crystal and cutting and polishing manufacturers, and then sold them to LED epitaxial chip companies after PSS processing.
Due to the difficulty of the manufacturing process, the price of PSS substrate is higher than that of ordinary sapphire substrate, mainly because the sapphire substrate is relatively hard. Whether it is dry etching or wet etching, the whole pattern is consistent and uniform. There are certain difficulties, and the production process requires high equipment and processes.
The lack of market supply and the high price of foreign high-quality PSS have been high, which led some domestic extension companies to adopt self-produced PSS substrates, thus reducing the cost of epitaxial wafers to a certain extent.
According to the reporter, epitaxial chip companies generally have the conditions for producing PSS substrates, because some epitaxial devices can be compatible with the production of PSS substrates through process modification.
"We have equipment and technology, and our own production is a natural thing." Biandifei admits that Huacan Optoelectronics not only purchases PSS substrates, but also partially produces it.

Domestic market opportunities remain
According to the latest statistics from the High-tech LED Industry Research Institute, as of the first quarter of 2012, nearly 60 sapphire projects have been put into operation, under construction and just planned. Among them, the proportion of sapphire projects that have been put into production has exceeded 35%, and the number of new sapphire projects in China has reached 35 in 2011.
If the under construction and planned sapphire projects are all completed and put into production, the annual production capacity of domestic 2-inch sapphire substrates will exceed 300 million pieces, which is equivalent to 10 times of the global demand for sapphire substrates in 2010.
The hidden danger of overcapacity in sapphire substrates has emerged. Since the growth of sapphire crystals and the threshold of ordinary substrate processing technology are not too high, it has become one of the main reasons for the influx of domestic manufacturers.
For the future market of sapphire manufacturers, on the one hand, it will increase the scale of long crystals and seize market share by cost advantage; on the other hand, it is to seek high value-added sapphire substrate products, and PSS substrate is one of them. The reporter learned that there are only a handful of companies in China that can supply PSS substrates in batches.
Recently, the joint venture announcement of the PSS substrate of the listed company Dongjing Electronics has once again caused great concern in the market. According to the announcement, Dongjing Electronics plans to invest USD 7.2 million and establish a Sino-foreign joint venture with Korean company CTLab. It mainly develops, produces and sells LED graphic sapphire substrate and epitaxial wafers.
The relevant person in charge of Dongjing Electronics said that this is a continuation of the LED industry strategy since the company established the two wholly-owned subsidiaries of Zhejiang Dongjing Optoelectronics and Huangshanjing Optoelectronics last year to implement the LED sapphire project. He said that the introduction of Korea's high-efficiency sapphire graphic substrate proprietary technology, through the realization of the industrialization of PSS, to meet the demand for PSS for LED sapphire substrates, is conducive to the vertical integration of the company's industrial chain.
For domestic and foreign manufacturers, although some PSS substrate products in China can meet their requirements, the problem of insufficient process is still widespread.
"Different PSS patterns need to be matched with different epitaxial wafers." Li Junmeng said that foreign countries are currently very mature in PSS technology and process matching, and domestic enterprises still need to work hard to improve process matching.
At present, the price of PSS substrate in the domestic market is about 17 US dollars / piece, up to 20 US dollars / piece. In the view of Bian Defei, there is still room for growth in the price of PSS substrates in the future.
