Microprocessor market will reach 61 billion U.S. dollars

According to market research firm IC Insights, due to the downturn in the traditional PC market, demand for smart phones and tablet PCs continues to increase, and the microprocessor market for mobile processors in continuous expansion is becoming more and more important. In addition, non-x86 processors (which can be interpreted as ARM-based processors) are increasingly difficult to penetrate into the personal computer market.

The mobile market is growing rapidly. IC Insights expects that microprocessor chip sales will increase by 8% in 2013, reaching a market size of 61 billion U.S. dollars. Tablet PC processor market share will increase by 54% from the previous year to 3.5 billion US dollars; and mobile applications processor sales will grow 30% to 16.1 billion US dollars, but less than one-third of the microprocessor market.

IC Insights expects to ship approximately 2.15 billion processor chips in 2013, of which tablet processor shipments will grow by 62% to 190 million, and handset application processor shipments will increase by 11% to reach 15. Billion stars.

IC Insights also revised its forecast for sales of x86 microprocessors to the PC and server market in 2013, reducing it from 58% of the overall microprocessor market to 56%. The share of tablet application processors has increased from 5% to 6%. The forecasted value for embedded applications processors also increased from the previous 2% to 11%, while the forecast for mobile applications processors remained at 26%.

In addition, IC Insights pointed out that this year's non-x86 architecture will only have 1% of notebook and desktop PC penetration. The company originally forecasted to increase by 2% in January this year.

The overall development trend is that the demand for touch screen mobile phones and tablet PCs is driving the demand for ARM application processors, and the shipment of standard PCs has caused a lot of problems for x86 processor vendors Intel and AMD. This is because the two companies have provided more than 95% of the x86 architecture PCs since 1980.

The processor market for PCs, servers, large computers and embedded applications is expected to shrink by 1% in 2013, reaching approximately $41.4 billion. IC Insights said that due to the weakness of the standard PC market, which constrains the originally expected market, the market is expected to decline by 5% in 2013.
