British researchers reach the fastest data transfer rate ever

Researchers at University College London (UCL) have reached the fastest data transfer rate ever in digital information. As researchers focused on studying the capacity limitations of optical transmission systems, they successfully achieved a data transmission rate of 1.125 Tb/s. This rate is part of a team effort to increase the speed of data transfer available to home and enterprise network systems.


The project's lead researcher, Dr. Robert Maher from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of London, said that the state's most advanced commercial optical transmission system can receive 100Gb of data per second on a single channel. We are designing the next generation of core networks. And communication system, can process more than 1Tb of data per second.

Dr. Robert Maher stated that his team achieved speeds in the laboratory about 50,000 times faster than the average speed of broadband in the UK. Currently, the average broadband speed in the UK is about 24 Mb/s. At 1.125 Tb/s, users can download the entire 1080p Game of Thrones in about 1 second.

In order to achieve such high data transmission speeds, the researchers used coding techniques commonly used for wireless communication. The optical communication system was built on a university campus using the 256QAM format commonly used by cable modems and 15 different wavelengths of optical signals. The channels are then combined into a "super channel".
