When the fighter passes the mission point at a speed close to the speed of sound, the cylindrical container begins to spread tiny black capsules.
When falling to a certain height, the parachute carried by the capsule opens, and a miniature drone is flying inside each capsule. Then, these miniature drones rushed toward the mission target.
In this test, these fast-moving drones passed through a series of waypoints with high accuracy and successfully reached the target position set by the controller.
A total of 103 "Hawthorn" miniature drones were launched in three F/A-18 "Super Hornet" fighters.
The "Hawthorn" miniature UAV has a wing length of 30 cm, a wing width of less than 3 cm and a weight of approximately 450 grams. Originally designed by students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States, it was first remodeled for military testing in 2013.
In the 2015 test, 20 “Hawthorn†drones were tested for the first release by the F-16 fighter. The "Hawthorn" drone is not a synchronized individual with pre-programmed programs, but is controlled by the same computer as a whole.
After the launch, each "Hawthorn" UAV can communicate with each other through radio to form a collective rush to the enemy. Just like the bee colony in nature, the individual listens to the will of the whole.
If the "Super Hornet" fighter is a queen, these tiny drones are the bee colonies released by the queen.
