According to Reuters, Facebook plans to use artificial intelligence technology and update its tools and services to help prevent users from committing suicide.
Facebook said on Wednesday that it plans to integrate existing suicide prevention tools for Facebook posts into the live streaming feature FacebookLive and messaging service Messenger, and artificial intelligence will be used to help identify suicidal users.
According to the New York Post, in January of this year, a 14-year-old daughter from Florida lived on Facebook Live. Facebook is already using artificial intelligence to monitor bad information in live video.
Facebook said on Wednesday that the updated tool will provide an option for users watching live video to allow them to directly contact suicidal users and report the video to Facebook. Facebook will also provide resource assistance to report users, including contacting friends and making hot calls.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 29. A study by the National Center for Health Statistics found that after a period of almost continuous decline, the US suicide rate increased by 24% between 1999 and 2014.
