Optimizing die casting and forming processes, WACKER awards new high-efficiency silicones for LEDs...

Wacker Chemie AG awarded Dr. Philipp Müller the "AlexanderWacker Innovation Award" on July 14th. Wacker Chemie plans to introduce these new optically efficient silicone elastomers to the market. The new optically efficient silicones can be optimized under the LUMISIL® brand. The complex die-casting and forming process directly produces the required optical lens on the LED chip through a process to improve the molding and mounting efficiency of the LED optical component. Therefore, it is a major breakthrough in the low-cost mass production of LEDs. This award is 10,000 euros for the Innovation Award this year in the field of product innovation.

In order to achieve output coupling and distribution of LEDs, high efficiency LEDs require an optical lens. In the past few years, the efficiency of LEDs has increased dramatically, which has prevented the organic materials used to date from continuing to withstand the luminous flux intensity. For this reason, the production of advanced and efficient LEDs will mainly use silicone as a package and optical material in the future, because silicone has the required heat and light stability. The disadvantage is that the geometry of the lens has heretofore been achieved using complex die casting and forming processes.

For the first time, silicone elastomers using the LUMISIL® product line have been used to make bare lenses directly on LED chips in a single process using the Dispens process. A perfect lens geometry can be obtained using a new UV-controlled hardening mechanism. LUMISIL? 419UV has excellent bonding characteristics, and it can even omit the packaged silicone used so far because it has the optical function and also protects the LED chip. In this way, LED components with silicone lenses can now be mass-produced with relatively little equipment and process expense.

The Alexander Wacker Innovation Awards Since 2005, the Munich-based chemical group has awarded its outstanding research and development staff at its annual scientific conference. Named after the founder of the company, the “AlexanderWacker Innovation Award” with a prize of 10,000 euros is awarded annually in the areas of product innovation, process innovation and basic research.
