Japanese LED Lighting Market Shows High Growth

DIGITIMES Research, a market research institute, points out that in 2010, the Japanese LED lighting market expanded rapidly and was 2.7 times larger than in 2009, reaching 86.5 billion yen (about US$1.1 billion). Japan's LED lighting market can grow so fast, in addition to Japan's mature LED R & D technology, the government's active advocacy also has a certain role.

DIGITIMES Research analyzed that the power saving measures that accompany the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011 were an important factor that prompted consumers to switch to LED lighting. Therefore, LED lighting in Japan will start in 2011 and take the lead in growing into other countries. According to statistics, after the 311 earthquake in Japan, the sales volume of LED bulbs grew by 2 to 3 times before the earthquake, accounting for the first time that the proportion of electric bulb lighting exceeded that of incandescent bulbs.

Japan's 311 earthquake is undoubtedly the biggest driving force for accelerating the growth of Japan's LED lighting market. In 2011, the standard for LED ball lights and straight LED lamps were introduced, and the price of LED bulbs dropped to around 2,000 yen. With the promotion of various lighting factors, the lighting market will have an opportunity to reach nearly 1.8 times of 2010, which is 157 billion yen.

In 2012, Japan began to require all lighting manufacturers to stop manufacturing and selling incandescent light bulbs. By then, DIGITIMES Research expects that the demand for LED bulbs will increase. Therefore, DIGITIMES Research estimates that 2011 and 2012 will be highly-developed LED lighting and will grow year by year. The rate will be above 70%.

However, due to the early outbreak of LED lighting demand in 2011, the market growth will slow down after 2012; however, the Japanese government intends to provide a next-generation lighting subsidy program in 2015 to achieve the goal of 2020 high-efficiency lighting market scale of 100%. The LED lighting market will continue to grow at a certain rate. DIGITIMES Research estimates that the market penetration of LED lighting in 2015 will reach nearly 75%.
