Linear Technology pushes dual output synchronous step-down DC/DC controller

Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC3865/-1, a dual-output synchronous step-down DC/DC controller with 95% efficiency. The device features a two-pin selectable VOUT setting, which saves 4 Precision feedback resistors. The output voltage maintains a tight ±1% accuracy, including the initial set point, an operating temperature range of -40°C to 125°C, and load/voltage regulation. 9 output voltages from 0.6V to 5V can be selected. The 4.5V to 38V input voltage range covers a wide range of applications, including most intermediate bus voltages and battery chemistries. A powerful built-in N-channel MOSFET driver allows the use of high-power external MOSFETs to generate up to 20A of output current. Applications include point-of-load regulators in medical, industrial, automotive, datacom, telecommunications, and multifunction printers.
The constant frequency current mode architecture allows for the selection of fixed or phase-lockable (PLL) switching frequencies from 250kHz to 770kHz. Minimize power loss and power supply noise by operating the stages at 180o. OPTI-LOOP® compensation reduces transient response and can be optimized over a wide range of output capacitors and ESR values, including all ceramic input and output capacitors. Output current sensing is accomplished by measuring the voltage drop across the output inductor (DCR) for maximum efficiency or by using an optional sense resistor. In the event of a short circuit, current foldback limits the heat of the MOSFET. In addition, the LTC3865/-1 features adjustable soft-start or tracking to control the output voltage startup characteristics. The LTC3865/-1 offers up to 99% duty cycle with very low dropout voltage, which is a very useful feature for extended runtime in battery-powered applications.
The LTC3865/-1 is available in thermally enhanced 5mm x 5mm QFN-12 and SSOP-38 packages. It is available in 1,000-piece quantities and is priced at $2.65 each.
