WAN is a data communication network covering a relatively wide geographic area. It usually uses the convenience provided by public carrier companies for transmission.
The WAN technology plays a role in the next three layers of the OSI reference model (that is, the physical layer, data link layer, and network layer).
WAN usually operates in two switching modes, namely circuit switching and packet switching technology.
The circuit mode is based on the principle of circuit switching in the telephone network. When the user requests to send data, the switch connects a physical data transmission path between the calling user and the called user. The characteristics are small delay, "transparent" transmission (that is, the transmission path does not modify or interpret user data), and the throughput of information transmission is large. The disadvantage is that the occupied bandwidth is fixed and the utilization rate of network resources is low.
The grouping mode is a store-and-forward switching method. It divides the information to be transmitted into packets (packets) of a certain length, and stores and forwards them in units of packets. Each packet information carries the identification of the receiving address and the sending address. Before transmitting the packet, a virtual circuit must first be established and then transmitted in sequence. The grouping method uses dynamic multiplexing technology on the line to transmit each group, and the bandwidth can be reused. The disadvantage is that the real-time is not good.
