Promote environmental protection, 24 cities around the world will collectively turn off the lights next month

24 cities around the world will “fall into the dark” next month, as many families and businesses in these cities will collectively turn off the lights to raise concerns about global warming, the organizers of the event announced on Tuesday.

The "Earth Hour" event was held for the first time in Sydney, Australia's largest city last year. At that time, about 2.2 million residents in the city collectively turned off the lights, the Sydney Opera House without lights was bathed in the moonlight, and the Bay Bridge was also turned off.

Event organizer Andy Ridley said that Sydney's "light out of the hour" campaign has aroused great interest from countries around the world. Currently, 23 cities in Asia Pacific, North America, Europe and the Middle East have signed up for this year's event.

The eight most recent cities responded to include: Atlanta, San Francisco and Phoenix in the United States, Bangkok, Thailand, Ottawa, Vancouver and Montreal, Canada, and Dublin, Ireland. In addition, the participating cities include: Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Adelaide, Copenhagen, Aarhus, Aalborg and Odense, Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Fiji's largest city, Suva, Christchurch, New Zealand, and Chicago, Tel Aviv and Toronto.

The "Earth Hour" campaign initiated by the World Wildlife Fund is scheduled to start at 8pm local time on March 29th. Ridley said he hopes that this concept will cross national borders and affect more countries. Reid said: "I know that everyone thought that the night's activities might save 5% of energy, but in fact we saved 10.1% of energy."

Reider said he hopes the event will send a "visual information with strong impact" to politicians, and let them realize that it is imperative to manage climate change. He said: "This problem is really serious, but when we act collectively, the results are different."
