Is turning Google Glass into an augmented reality watch a better idea?

[Abstract] The foreign team is developing an augmented reality smart watch that achieves image positioning and overlay through transparent screens and external sensors.

The Verge Chinese Station reported on March 3

Remember Google Glass? A wearable device that is innovative but ultimately unable to enter the consumer market. Maybe it's because the glasses aren't pretty enough, maybe because it's too expensive, maybe there's privacy (but Snapchat's glasses are pretty good), and in short, smart glasses are not yet mature.

However, no one denies the future of augmented reality technology, at least people do not want to use the mobile phone screen as the only medium for augmented reality content. Recently, teams from the University of Bremen, Germany, and Google and Hasselt University in Belgium opened a smart watch called “WatchThru” and used a transparent screen to achieve augmented reality interaction.

Although it looks a bit rough, the whole concept is very easy to understand. For example, using a smart watch navigation, the screen will display an electronic map, and an arrow will appear on the front transparent screen to immediately alert the user of the direction.

Or, when you want to figure out the structure of the circuit board, use the watch to run the relevant application, and the transparent screen will superimpose the augmented reality image to guide. However, this version of the watch hardware is more complex, including external sensors and tracking camera devices to determine the position of the user's head and objects. Obviously, if a smart watch is made this way, basically no one will wear it.

The development team stated that two different types of prototype hardware are currently being developed, one is an ordinary Android watch with a transparent screen, while the other is the style of the integrated bulky external sensor and camera mentioned above. But in the future, the team hopes to develop models with pop-up transparent screens and solve the problems of external sensors.

Of course, don't expect too much of an augmented reality watch will soon be on the market. After all, this project is still at an exploratory stage. But it is worth being pleased that augmented reality can also be experienced on the watch and is in a fun way. (Author: Chaim Gartenberg compilation: Gin)
